Two of Hawaii's top youth volunteers met Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, in Washington, D.C., earlier this month, as part of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremonies.
Jacqueline Ho, 17, of Pearl City and Megan Meimei Nakahara, 14, of Kamuela, were honored along with 100 other youth volunteers at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History on May 4. Both received $1,000 checks.
Ho, a senior at Kamehameha Schools, has been a Special Olympics volunteer since she was 10-years-old. Nakahara, an eighth-grader at Hawai'i Preparatory academy, played a lead role in a project monitoring sea turtles and raising public awareness about their plight.
