Punahou boys team up to take title

MILILANI — A monster team effort propelled Punahou to its second straight boys title at last night's Island Movers/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at John Kauinana Stadium.
The Buffanblu won just one event, but had athletes place in 10 of 16 events to finish with 55.75 points. Radford was second with 52 and Baldwin was third with 41.75. Punahou won for the fourth time since 2001, a nice farewell gift to coach Mike Pavich, who's retiring after what he said was "25 or 26" years of coaching. He's been teaching at Punahou for 28 years.
"Track has changed from the past, we became more of a team sport," said Punahou's Abe Markowitz, who finished second in the shot put and discus to score 16 points. "We warm up together and start off the season together."
Punahou's Zach Coronas, bothered by a leg injury for the past month, hobbled into the state meet. He ended up defending his 400-meter title and placed third in the 100. Pavich said Coronas "ran until he couldn't run anymore."
"Today when I came in, I wasn't sure I was running the 400," Coronas said. "I was maybe going to go strong in the 100, 200 and 4x400, but I ran all right in the 100 and after that I decided to defend my title."
Pavich said Tobie Reeuwijk and Ryan Nakasone stepped up in the 800. Reeuwijk was third in 1:59.45 and Nakasone was fifth in 2:00.27.
"One was ranked 16th and other was ranked ninth and neither one of them have been under 2:02 and they did a 2-flat and 1:59," Pavich said.
Radford's Christopher Rainey had a stellar meet, breaking the 200 record by 0.01 seconds with a time of 21.89 seconds. He also won the 100 in 10.89, barely missing the state meet record by 0.09 seconds, placed second in the 400 and also ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Radford's 4x100 relay team of Donniqtay Campbell, Jonathan Atangan, Ikaika Kamaka and Rainey broke the meet record of 42.78 in Friday's trials with a time of 42.53 The Rams won yesterday, finishing in 42.55. The same four also won the 4x400 in 3:22.46, with Campbell and Atangan running their best times in their 400 legs.
"As a coach that's what you want, you want your team and athletes to have their best times," Radford co-coach Sid Patton said. "We came up a little short, but that's the way it bounces sometimes. You can't win every time."
Baldwin's Joey Amescua won his third straight boys 800 title, winning in 1:55.01. He also helped the Bears finish second in the 4x400.
"It wasn't so much about getting the medals, but improve in each race and up my standards," Amescua said.
Javen Correia of Maryknoll capped off an undefeated season, winning both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. He spent time with his father all week going over his mental approach, then before Friday's trials, he took a dip at the beach and went to Mount Lahilahi in Makaha.
"I looked out into the horizon and saw myself finishing," said Correia, who credited his family and his younger brother Jarius, who has Down Syndrome. "I said a prayer and felt cleansed."
Kaiser's Dawson Vorderbruegge set a record in the 3,000 with a time of 8:58.14, breaking Todd Iacovelli's mark of 9:01.80 from 2002. It's the second time he's run a sub-9 time this month, and he's the only runner to go under 9 minutes in a Hawai'i prep meet.
"It felt a bit fast for laps two through four," Vorderbruegge said. "It was faster than what I was comfortable with but it was my last race so I just had to stick it out."
Two field event winners made the most of their opportunities.
'Iolani senior Reid Furukawa won the long jump. He fouled in two of his three attempts in Friday's trials, but his one good mark of 22 feet, 2 1/4 inches was enough to carry him to a state title. Furukawa also fouled twice yesterday.
"I'm relieved, excited," Furukawa said. "Just had to go for broke today."
'Aiea's Brennan Sato won the shot put title in his first year of competition with a mark of 53-6 3/4. He credited coaches Lee Purcell and Barney Hansen for pointing out small mistakes and boosting his confidence.
"I qualified third (after the preliminaries) and that was actually a good thing for me," Sato said. "Everybody didn't know who I was. I was kind of like the dark horse."
