Kamehameha girls capture first state crown

MILILANI — A second-place finish helped the Kamehameha girls track and field team take first.
The Warriors won their first HHSAA/Island Movers Track & Field Girls Championship at Mililani High last night, unseating four-time champion Punahou.
"I hope this isn't the last time we win," Kamehameha junior Ashlee Jimenez said. "Punahou is a tough team to beat."
The Warriors held a 5.5-point lead over Punahou headed into the final event, the 4x400-meter relay, but their second-place finish gave them eight points, enough to hold off Punahou's 10 points for the relay win.
"You give your all; it's more your heart and your mind than your body," Jimenez, the Warriors' 4x400 anchor, said. "Track is an individual sport, but it all comes down to the team."
Behind first-place finishes by shot-putter Charmaine "Noe" Mokiao and high jumper Kanani Herring, the Warriors scored 59.25 points. Punahou finished with 55.75 points and Kahuku was third with 46.
"It's great; I'm so excited," Kamehameha senior Alana Meditz said. "This is the most exciting thing that's happened to me."
Mokiao defended her title in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 9 1/2 inches on her final attempt.
"I just went for it. I even did a kia, which is a growl," Mokiao said. "That was my last throw and this was my last meet, so I thought I should go for it."
Herring, the Advertiser State Player of the Year in volleyball, jumped 5-3.
Kahuku freshman Zhane Santiago won three events, doubling up in both hurdle events and winning the triple jump.
She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.12 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 46.22, and jumped 35-7.
"I was expecting really hard competition, but I tried my best," Santiago said. "All of these girls are good out here.
"(I really wanted to win) the 100 hurdles, because I knew (Ka'u's Larissa Edwards) was really good," she added. "I didn't want to let myself down."
Two Neighbor Island runners also won multiple events.
Seabury Hall freshman phenom Kailea Tracy-Visintainer lived up to her hype, winning both the 400 (56.98) and 200 (25.06).
"I feel amazed and really excited," Tracy-Visintainer said. "There was some pressure. I knew I was the top seed, and my coach told me I would have a target on my back. I was really relaxed; I knew all I could do was run my fastest."
She won the 400 with a cushion of 2.56 seconds and her 200 time was .02 off the state record time (Lauran Dignam, 25.04, 2002).
King Kekaulike junior Bailey Massenburg won the 1,500 (5:17.47), 800 (2:19.21) and finished second in the 3,000 (10:40.75) behind Kaiser's Sarah Clapp (10:30.82)
Massenburg and Kamehameha-Maui's Ka'ahumanu Rozet led a tight pack of runners before breaking away in the final lap in the 1,500.
"Last year I wasn't prepared," Massenburg said. "It was the first time running in states and I led the whole race and got passed at the end. Today I just wanted to keep good position. I was just working with the pack."
Massenburg ran the 1,500 in 4:51 at the Maui Interscholastic League championships, making yesterday's winning time nearly 30 seconds slower.
"I knew it was slow, but it was a really relaxed pace," she said. "I wasn't going for time at all."
Kalani senior Yasmina Taketa won the long jump for the second straight year, setting a personal record of 18-5 1/2.
"I've been hitting 17-8, 17-9 consistently all year," Taketa said. "I've been wanting to get 18, and I'm happy it's at states.
"I'm really happy I ended well as a senior. It feels good."
Taketa fouled on her first attempt, and hit the winning distance on her second jump. She also reached 18 feet on her third jump of 18-2.75.
"The foul made me mad," she said. "I do super well under pressure, I guess."
Kaua'i's Tiffany Ikeda-Simao won the 100-meter dash in 12.38.
"It's amazing," said Ikeda-Simao, who finished sixth in last year's championships. "I just wanted to put out my best (effort) and hopefully come out on top."
She also anchored Kaua'i's winning 4x100-meter relay team, winning with Kathleen Cadiente, Kelsey Cadiente and Jamilee Jimenez in 49.03.
