A 66-year-old Kihei woman died yesterday after a car struck her early in the morning, Maui police said.

The pedestrian, Juanita Baloaloa, was walking south on South Kihei Road about 100 feet south of Nohokai Street at 4:25 a.m. yesterday when she was hit by a white 1997 Lexus sedan traveling in the same direction, police said.

She was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition and died hours later, police said.

The driver, a 56-year-old Kihei woman, was not injured, police said.

On O'ahu, meanwhile, a Hawai'i Kai man arrested Thursday night after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his car on Kalaniana'ole Highway while driving under the influence of an intoxicant was released from police custody yesterday pending further investigation, police said.

The 54-year-old Lunalilo Home Road resident was arrested at 10:15 p.m. Thursday at Kalaniana'ole Highway and Keahole Street.

Police said the man's 2005 Infiniti was traveling east on the highway near Outback Steakhouse when it struck a 28-year-old woman, who was not in a crosswalk. Police said the woman was trying to cross the highway toward a beach park. The accident was reported at 8:46 p.m.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition but yesterday was upgraded to serious condition, police said.

The Infiniti driver was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and first-degree negligent injury.
