YERBA BUENA GARDENS FESTIVAL

Each year San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens Festival presents music, theater, dance, and fabulous cultural events reflecting the cultures and creativity of the Bay area. Between May and October, the festival offers nearly 100 programs in Yerba Buena Gardens, such as Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa's new touring ensemble, Afreecanos, that explores the rich heritage of African music in jazz and Latin music. 1-2:30 p.m. June 8. KA HULA PIKO FESTIVAL, MOLOKA'I

Moloka'i hosts the 17th Annual Ka Hula Piko Festival with entertainment, Hawaiian Food and crafts by the people of Moloka'i. The festival began in 1991; tradition calls for hula to be precise and dramatic, but the spirit of the day is noncompetitive.

Performances are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Papohaku Beach Park, Kaluako'i. 808-553-3673 or the Moloka'i Visitors Association at 808-553-3876. Admission is free.

JULY 7-11

FAMILY KAYAK ADVENTURE IN CANADA

Sea Kayak Adventures offers summer kayaking getaways based at God's Pocket Resort, a wilderness lodge perched on a tiny island just north of British Columbia's Vancouver Island. Though such trips are slated for late June through early August, a July 7-11 itinerary is designed especially for families with teens, putting parents or grandparents and teens ages 13-17 out on the water each day in search of whales, sea lions and seals.

Cost: $1,699 includes accommodations, meals, kayaking gear, guides and boat shuttle to the resort from Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. Teens receive a 10 percent discount.
