Preliminary plans were revealed last week for the huge plot of land behind the Las Vegas Strip where the defunct Desert Inn golf course now sits. Steve Wynn says that the land will be developed into a 1.8-million-square-foot convention center supported by two new hotel towers with a combined 5,200 rooms. The plan calls for underground trams to shuttle conventioneers to and from the center and a lush "non-urban environment," with a Bellagio-style lake and fountains as its centerpiece. No timetable was announced, but projections for the complex put the completion date beyond 2010.
BRAXTON OUT: After canceling shows and taking a vacation following her hospitalization with chest pains in early April, Toni Braxton is still not performing at the Flamingo. The first tickets available are for a June 6 performance.
OSMONDS IN: It's been confirmed that Donny and Marie Osmond will succeed Braxton at the Flamingo beginning Sept. 9. Tickets have been announced at $85 to $250 for shows during the six-month engagement.
CHER ON: Cher has opened in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. After this monthlong run, she'll be back throughout August, plus additional dates already have been added for September and early October. Tickets are $113 to $276.
BIG MOVE: Once this year's World Series of Poker final table is set, there will be a 117-day break before playing down to a champion. This will allow a build-up to the final and prevent viewers from knowing in advance who wins. But the final table won't be broadcast live.
Q. Station Casino's Viva project is to be Las Vegas' "fourth metaresort." What are the other three?
A. Currently being built are CityCenter on the south end of the Strip and Echelon Place on the site of the former Stardust. The third is the unnamed MGM Mirage development planned for the far north end of the Strip.
