Perkins advances in France

Advertiser staff

Bonga Perkins was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the quarterfinals of the Oxbow WLT longboard surfing contest yesterday.

The third and fourth rounds were completed yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Les Dunes, Anglet, France.

Perkins won two heats yesterday, defeating California's Troy Mothershead in the third round, then France's Timothy Creignout in the fourth round.

Perkins was one of the standouts of the fourth round, receiving a two-wave score of 15.0. He is scheduled to face California's Colin McPhillips in the quarterfinals. Perkins (1996) and McPhillips (1999, 2001, 2002) are former world champions.

Hawai'i surfers Duane DeSoto and Kai Sallas were eliminated yesterday.

Defending world champion Phil Rajzman of Brazil defeated DeSoto in the fourth round, 11.5-8.9. McPhillips eliminated Sallas in the third round, 16.25-14.35.

The contest is the first of two that will determine the 2008 world champion of longboard surfing.
