Brian Ching scores in Dynamo's 2-1 loss to Rapids

Associated Press

HOUSTON — Dwayne De Rosario converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute to lead the Houston Dynamo to their first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids tonight.

Colorado's Ugo Ihemelu was issued a yellow card in the 86th minute for an intentional handball in the box. De Rosario took the penalty kick and fired a shot into the left corner to give the Dynamo the lead.

Houston (1-2-4) opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when Brian Ching took an upfield pass from Stuart Holden for a breakaway. Ching faked out Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and scored into an empty net. It was Houston's first score in 234 minutes. Ching is a Kamehameha alum from Hale'iwa.

Colorado (3-4-0) tied the game in the 68th minute when Christian Gomez fed Omar Cummings a pass on the right box that he shot past a diving Pat Onstad.

In the 71st minute, Rapids assistant coach Gary Smith was ejected by referee Tim Weyland, and in the 89th minute, Colorado's Tom McManus was issued a red card while on the bench.

Onstad finished with five saves for Houston.
