Revisit the era of big band, jazz and swing at "In the Mood," left, a 1940s musical revue, which returns with singers, dancers and the 14-member String of Pearls band providing the sounds. Each performance will pay tribute those in the audience who serve, or have served, in the armed forces. "In the Mood" last played the Hawai'i Theatre in May 2006.

CONCERT: MAY 17

Roots, rock and reggae take centerstage at the Second Annual Reggae on the Rocks Music Festival, featuring international artists Da'Ville, Half Pint, Mad Cobra and Grammy-nominated Freddie McGregor, left. Local artists performing include Ooklah the Moc, Rebel Souljahz and Laga Savea. It's an all-ages concert.

FESTIVAL: MAY 17-18

The Hawaii Book & Music Festival is the Islands' biggest assembly of local, national and international authors, musicians and storytellers. A dozen stages and pavilions host performances, readings, author signings, panels and entertainment. There's a Keiki Festival sponsored by Target, and food and activities for the whole family, too. The third annual festival is presented by Bank of Hawaii, in association with the city.

FILM FESTIVAL: MAY 22-25

The 19th annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, presented by the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation, showcases 20 features ("Shelter," 7 p.m. May 22; "Mulligans," below, 6:15 p.m. May 23; "The New World," 6:30 p.m. May 24; "Pageant," 12:30 p.m. May 25, to name a few), shorts and documentaries. There's a gala (1920s Garden Cabaret Party), too, at 7 p.m. May 25 ($40, $45) at the Linekona Arts Center. Festival passes are $40 to $1,000.

COMEDY: MAY 24

Funnygirl Kathy Griffin brings her fearless, blunt and witty standup comedy to the Waikiki Shell. Griffin is known for her numerous TV appearances including her four-year stint on NBC's "Suddenly Susan," and more recently for her Bravo reality TV show, "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2007 for best reality series.

Honor and remember those who have gone before at the 10th annual Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony at Ala Moana Beach Park. More than 1,500 lanterns will be lit and cast afloat from the shore at sunset as a symbol of togetherness and hope for a bright future. The event will also include entertainment, speeches and a Buddhist service officiated by Shinso Ito, head of Shinnyo-en Hawaii. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Ala Moana Beach Park.

CONCERT: MAY 30

There's no stopping Bill Tapia and his 'ukulele as he brings his Concert of the Century to the Monarch Room of The Royal Hawaiian hotel. Tapia, who turned 100 just a few months ago, will share the stage with fellow award-winning entertainers Makana, Jeff Peterson, Owana Salazar and Mihana. The concert will be a stylish sendoff for The Royal Hawaiian hotel before it closes for major restoration June 1.

CONCERT: JUNE 7

Summer means it's time again for the concert hosted by The Makaha Sons, "Take a Walk in the Country 6." The Sons — left, front to back, Louis "Moon" Kauakahi, John Koko and Jerome Koko — will share the stage with Hawaiian Connection, Kealo Koko, Halau Hula 'O Hokulani, Halau Hula 'O Kawaili'ula, Ka Leo 'O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka La, Puka'ikapuaokalani Hula Halau and more. The concert, previously at the Waikiki Shell, is opting for the harborfront venue for the first time, meaning reduced seating for 800 to 1,000. VIP service starts at 5:30 p.m. and includes a gourmet buffet dinner catered by Chai's Island Bistro with reserved seating.

CONCERT: JUNE 7

Get ready for some face-melting metal, punk, hardcore, thrash and rock at the 7th Annual Metal Fest. The concert will feature three stages and more than 30 bands from the Islands and California, including Corrupt Absolute, The Silas, Breaking the Innocent, 86 List, Bari Bari 13, right, and more.
