Punahou leading by seven shots
Advertiser Staff
Defending champion Punahou set a tournament record yesterday, opening defense of its David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Girls Golf State Championship with a score of 4-over-par 220 at Wailua Golf Course. The team total (best three of four scores) is one better than Hilo's first round in 2003 at Waikoloa Beach.
Punahou freshman Alina Ching and Waiakea junior Britney Yada share the individual lead after shooting 2-under-par 70s. Reigning Jennie K. Wilson champion Kristina Merkle, a Moanalua junior, is a shot back.
Punahou used Ching's 70, defending state champion Anna Jang's 74 and a 76 from freshman Cyd Okino, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, to set the record. Maui (227) is second and Waiakea (229) third.
Hilo won the girls state title in 2003, finishing with a total of 444 behind individual champion Kira-Ann Muruashige.
The final round tees off at 7 a.m. today. There are 11 players within six strokes of the lead, including Maui's Kelcie Kawano (76), who lost to Jang in a playoff last year.
Punahou's 2007 team title was its first. Waiakea has won three of the nine girls championships.
