A very strong earthquake rumbled across the ocean floor near the Japanese island of Honshu a little after 6:45 a.m. today Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor was assigned a preliminary magnitude of 6.7.

There was no immediate report of damage or injuries resulting from the quake. Its epicenter was reported to be about 6.2 miles below the earth's surface and 56 miles east of Mito, a city on Honshu., and 115 miles east-northeast of Tokyo.

It was the fifth of a series of earthquakes that began about 6 a.m. Hawaii time, each of them in almost the same location near Honshu.
