UH's Mason on All-MPSF water polo team

University of Hawai'i's Kelly Mason has been named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation seven-member water polo first team for the second year in a row.

Mason, a junior from Auckland, New Zealand, scored 58 goals for the Rainbow Wahine, who finished the season 20-10 and missed out on one of three at-large berths to the NCAA Championships.

Angela Turnbull, a junior from Canberra, Australia who led UH in scoring with 60 goals, was named MPSF honorable mention.

UH's Leoni Van Der Molen, from Diemen, Netherlands, and Carmen Eggens, from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, were named to the MPSF all-freshmen team. Van Der Molen scored 39 goals and Eggens 38.

UCLA's Courtney Mathewson and Jillian Kraus were named co-Players of the Year.


GOLF

UH TIES FOR EIGHTH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a final-round 315 yesterday to tie for eighth at 84-over-par 948 at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Jose, Calif.

New Mexico State shot 303—891 to beat runner-up Boise State (305) by five strokes. Fresno State was third with 307—908.

Boise State's Troy Merritt shot 1-under 71 to finish at 7-under 209 and win the individual title by 10 strokes over Fresno State's Grant Doverspike (76). New Mexico State's Kevin Lozares was third with 74—220.

Robert Berton led UH with 76—227 to place 10th. Other UH golfers were Ryan Perez (76—235, tie for 25th), Kamden Brakel (82—244, tie for 35th) and Cody Pewarchuk (81—246, tie for 39th).


TENNIS

HAWAI'I TEAM OUSTED

Hilo's Fernando Aguirregomezcorta and Honolulu's Joseph Kasnetz lost their doubles match yesterday in the Hawai'i International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The fourth-seeded team of Emmett Egger of Issaquah, Wash. and Jacob Jung of Upland, Calif. outlasted Aguirregomezcorta and Kasnetz, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the round of 16.
