Lawmakers fail to override veto of emergency-powers bill

Advertiser Staff

State lawmakers today failed to override Gov. Linda Lingle's veto of a bill that would limit her ability to use her emergency powers, except in the case of natural disasters, enemy attack or acts of terrorism.

The Senate had enough votes for the override but the House did not take it up.

Senate Bill 2828, passed by the Legislature earlier in the session, came in response to the governor's use of emergency powers to deal with homeless and abandoned-car issues, which some lawmakers felt should have been dealt with during the legislative session.

"This measure is particularly onerous because the substantial restrictions placed on the state's ability to respond to disasters in the future are also imposed on disaster-relief efforts that are currently under way, unless the Legislature permits them to continue by concurrent resolution," the governor said in her veto message.

The Advertiser's initial report online incorrectly said lawmakers voted to override the veto.
