Hawaii teen wins trampoline crown

Hawai'i's Nani Vercruyssen captured the junior elite trampoline title of the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships yesterday in San Jose, Calif.

Vercruyssen, a 16-year-old sophomore at Roosevelt High School, scored 35.80 points in the finals of the event.

"I'm really happy with how I did today," Vercruyssen said. "This helps me prepare me for my next competitions, and I hope I do well at those, too."

Canada's Samantha Sendel finished second with 35.10 points, followed by Russia's Nadezhda Glebova with 34.50.

Russia's Alexander Naumov won the junior elite male trampoline title, Japan's Tetsuya Sotomura took the senior elite male crown and Russia's Irina Karavaeva captured the senior elite female championship.

Earlier at the Hawai'i Trampoline Championships on March 20 to 23, Vercruyssen was named the most outstanding competitor, winning titles in the trampoline, double mini-trampoline and power tumbling.


SOFTBALL

HPU FALLS IN QUARTERS

Lindsay Warren hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning as Humboldt State defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 4-3, yesterday in a quarterfinal game of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

Natalie Galletly scored three runs and batted 2 for 2, including a solo homer in the first inning to lead the Lumberjacks (30-12).

Ciera Senas had two hits, including an RBI double, and Casey Sugihara and Krystal Plunkett each had RBI singles for the Sea Warriors (26-5), who scored all of their runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Lizzy Prescott (24-5) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Humboldt State, which went on to win the 18-team tournament by beating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, in the final.

Courtney Kessell (15-2) suffered the loss, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing all four runs while striking out two and walking five.

Also yesterday, Chico State beat Chaminade, 8-0, in a bronze bracket semifinal.

UH GAME CANCELED

The final game of Hawai'i's three-game series against Louisiana Tech was canceled yesterday due to inclement weather in Ruston, La. The Western Athletic Conference game will not be made up.

The 17th-ranked Rainbow Wahine (28-11 and 4-1), who swept LaTech Saturday, have a week off before hosting San Jose State on April 11 and 12.


TRIATHLON

MARR, SUMMERER WIN

Tim Marr and Marion Summerer won the Iroquois Point Island Club Triathlon yesterday.

Marr was the first male finisher, completing the 750-meter swim, 13-mile bike ride and 3.5-mile run in 54 minutes, 14 seconds. Chad Seymour (55:44) was second and Tai Blechata (57:14) third.

Summerer was the first female finisher in 1 hour, 1 minute, 36 seconds. Maggs Morris (1:04:54) was second and Sandra Ferreira (1:08:23) third.
