St. Mary's tops UH in softball

Sadie Delpit hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning as St. Mary's beat 17th-ranked Hawai'i, 4-2, yesterday in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawai'i took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kate Robinson slugged a two-run home run to left field. The Gaels (12-13) scored a run in the third and tied the game in the sixth.
St. Mary's reliever Megan Galloway earned the win, throwing five scoreless innings, striking out two and giving up two hits.
Hawai'i reliever Jessica Morton took the loss, giving up two runs on one hit with one strikeout.
The Rainbow Wahine (23-10) will face Northwestern today at 4 p.m. Colorado State faces St. Mary's at noon and California will play Northwestern at 2 p.m. in the other tournament games.
DIVING
FRIESEN 6TH IN 3-METER EVENT
A day after winning the NCAA title in the 1-meter dive, University of Hawai'i sophomore Emma Friesen finished sixth in the 3-meter final yesterday at Columbus, Ohio.
Friesen, from North Vancouver, British Columbia, was the top finisher in the 3-meter preliminaries at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She had a score of 362.90, followed by Bianca Alvarez of Ohio State with 339.65.
In the finals, Chelsea Davis of Ohio State, who was fifth in the preliminaries, won with 365.85, followed by Alvarez with 354.50. Friesen finished with 332.90.
Friesen earned another 13 points, along with the 20 points for her victory on Thursday, to give Hawai'i 33 points and 20th place in the team standings entering today's final day.
SURFING
PATACCHIA, POWERS ADVANCE
Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Roy Powers advanced to the third round of the Rip Curl Pro men's contest yesterday.
The second round was run in 3-to 5-foot waves at Bells Beach, Australia.
Patacchia advanced by defeating Kaua'i's Bruce Irons in the second round, 12.5-11.67.
Powers defeated Ben Bourgeois of North Carolina in the second round, 13.33-9.53.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the third round earlier this week.
The Rip Curl Pro is the second of 11 events on the 2008 World Championship Tour.
In the Rip Curl Women's Pro, Megan Abubo of Waialua advanced to the quarterfinals. Abubo defeated South Africa's Rosanne Hodge in the third round, 12.33-12.0.
The third round of the women's contest was also run yesterday at Bells Beach. Abubo is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the women's draw.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
HONOLULU'S OSHIRO TOPS CARIASO
Honolulu's Mark Oshiro defeated California's Chris Cariaso in the nationally televised ShoXC Elite Challenger Series mixed martial arts events last night at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.
Oshiro won by knockout when he landed a right hook that dropped Cariaso, 2:38 into the first round. Oshiro improved to 10-1; Cariaso dropped to 6-1. The bout was in the 140-pound class.
Also on the card, Maui's Analu Brash lost to California's Shane Del Rosario via first round TKO. The referee stopped it 3:18 into the first round when Del Rosario took Brash to the mat and started landing several unanswered punches.
Del Rosario improved to 4-0, while Brash dropped to 2-2. It was a heavyweight bout.
Both bouts were televised on the Showtime cable network.
GOLF
UH MEN TIED FOR 10TH
The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot an opening-round 288 to stand in 10th place after the first round of the Ron Moore Invitational yesterday in Goodyear, Ariz.
Kyle Walters was the top UH performer, tying for ninth after shooting 69 in the first round.
San Diego holds the first-round lead after shooting 277. Boise State's Troy Merritt is tied with two others for first at 6-under-par. The tournament continues today and ends tomorrow.
XTERRA TRIATHLON
BENNETT ON TV SHOW
Honolulu resident Amy Bennett will be one of the featured athletes in tonight's twin broadcast of the XTERRA USA Championship and the XTERRA World Championship tomorrow on KGMB.
Bennett, one of only four women to complete both the XTERRA and the Ironman World Championship in the same year, managed to complete the XTERRA World Championship last year despite breaking her wrist three days before the grueling off-road triathlon event.
The XTERRA USA Championship airs at 7 p.m., followed by the XTERRA World Championship at 8 p.m.
