Pitcher Makani Duhaylonsod smashed a grand slam yesterday as No. 1-ranked Mililani rode an explosive third inning to a 6-1 win over rival and No. 3 Campbell.

Mililani improves to 3-0 on the season.

The game was the first meeting between the schools since Mililani beat Campbell for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division title last year.

"It came down to one bad inning," said Campbell head coach David Perreira. "It's hard to come back from five runs down against a team like this."

With the game scoreless entering the third, Chanelle Senas nailed a line drive up the middle to score Courtney Abear from third.

Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, home team Campbell (2-1) intentionally walked Courtney Senas to get to Duhaylonsod, who took two strikes before smashing her line shot over the fence in right-center field.

"I had a feeling they were going to want to strike me out," Duhaylonsod said. "I just wanted to make contact and get on base. I thought it was short."

Mililani head coach Rose Antonio said that while she was pleased with the victory, she realizes her team still has much improvement ahead if it wants to defend its OIA title. Campbell swept Mililani in regular-season play last year before falling in the tournament.

"Today was a good test against a very good, very strong team," Antonio said. "But this is the first game we've played against a really good team this year. I like what I see, but we have to improve on all of the little things on defense and I'd like for us to improve on hitting the ball. We need to hit more."

Duhaylonsod agreed.

"We're in a good position but we've still got to work at getting better," she said. "Our best is way better than how we played today."

The game was also a good litmus test for Perreira's squad.

"It's sucks to lose but we feel we're OK," he said. "It's early in the season. We only compare ourselves to ourselves and we know what we need to work on."

In particular, Perreira said he wants his team to improve on its pitch selection.

"We need a better approach at the plate," he said.

Alex Smith homered and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning as the visiting Mules (3-1) rallied with four runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to beat the Chargers (0-4).
