The Pearl City baseball team took advantage of walks and errors in one inning yesterday against 'Aiea, and bunted its way to more success in another.

On the mound, Cory Yuh was in control after a shaky first inning.

Yuh allowed just two first-inning runs over six innings and host Pearl City scored three runs each in the fourth and sixth innings in a 7-2 victory over 'Aiea in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West game.

"We put the ball in play," said Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto. "We bunted the ball pretty good. Any time you get an opportunity, you need to cash in on it."

In the fourth, the Chargers' Bryson Namba and Carlton Tanabe drew one-out walks, and both advanced a base after a balk.

Bully Casarez followed with a ground ball and the third baseman's throw to the plate was low and got past the catcher, allowing two runs to score and put Pearl City (3-1) ahead 3-2.

Casarez reached second on the play and was eventually picked off by the pitcher. But the Chargers scored again after a walk, fielding error on the second baseman and Duane Kiyota's RBI double — the only ball that reached the outfield in the inning.

"The errors hurt," said 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato. "But the bigger thing is Pearl City took advantage of it. I tip my hat to them."

In the Pearl City sixth, Tanabe singled to right, and Casarez and Jared Nagai followed with perfectly placed bunt singles down the third-base line to load the bases.

The 'Aiea reliever, a finesse right-hander, had retired the first four batters he faced after entering in the fourth. But Nakamoto noticed he "was falling off to the first-baseman side" on his delivery.

"His pitches were coming in real slow and the kids had a hard time hitting it," Nakamoto said. "So I figured we might as well bunt the ball and see what happens. It paid off for us."

Terry Ryan, the No. 9 hitter, followed with a two-run single to left past a drawn-in infield to make it 6-2, and Bryson Nakamura drew a two-out bases-loaded walk.

Yuh, a left-hander, allowed only two hits after the first inning against 'Aiea (2-2). Na Ali'i was 0 for 8 with a walk with runners in scoring position from the second inning on.

"I just got a little bit nervous, but I settled down after a while and tried to hit my spots more," he said.

Yuh added his pitches in the first inning were "a little bit up and kind of down the middle."

Yuh walked two and struck out six, including five looking. All 18 outs he recorded were in the infield.

"He is a senior so we're really depending on him to do well out there," Nakamoto said.

Yuh was replaced by Kahana Neal to start the seventh because of a blister on his pitching hand.

"In the sixth inning, the last couple of pitches, it happened," Yuh said of the blister.

Neal walked the first two batters he faced, but retired the final three.
