A 37-year-old-old man has been charged in a March 7 home-invasion case that included the assault of a 79-year-old woman.

Matthew Ako III, who has a lengthy arrest and conviction record, is charged with burglarizing a Hokulewa Place home in Mililani and using force to rob one of the residents of the home, Yaeko Matsumoto.

Deputy Prosecutor Scott Spallina, head of the new elderly-abuse unit in the prosecutor's office, said Matsumoto suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Ako was one of several men involved in the home invasion, Spallina said.

The assailants also stole a car belonging to Matsumoto and her husband, Spallina said.

The defendant has a lengthy arrest and conviction record, the prosecutor told Circuit Judge Derrick Chan. At the request of the prosecutor, Chan set bail at $200,000.

Criminal Justice Data Center records show that Ako has past convictions for burglary, auto theft and criminal trespassing as well as probation and parole violations.
