Eighth-ranked UC Irvine brought out the worst in Hawai'i, sweeping a doubleheader 14-3 and 13-4, yesterday to complete the three-game, non-conference series sweep at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbows (7-12) were outscored 36-7 in the series. It was their worst beating in a three-game series since they were outscored 39-13 by Nevada on May 18-20, 2002.

"We just didn't show up in any phase today," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "(The Anteaters) were OK, but they weren't as dominant as what we've seen. Even last weekend (when Long Beach State swept UH), I didn't think (it was as dominant). Don't get me wrong. (The Anteaters) are good, but not good enough to where they dominated like they did.

"I guess you have to put this one on me. I sure feel like I let the guys down because it's my job to see that the guys were prepared and we weren't even close to being ready to play this weekend."

The Rainbows are 0-8 against nationally-ranked teams. They return home tonight and will play No. 21 San Diego Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Toreros close out a four-game series at UH-Hilo tomorrow.

To make matters worse, two Rainbows left yesterday's opener with injuries.

Designated hitter Ryan Asato pulled a hamstring while running out a fielder's choice grounder in the first inning. Trapasso said Asato will be "out for a while."

Two innings later, shortstop Greg Garcia injured his ankle while beating out a bunt single. Although he won't be examined until the team returns, Trapasso said it might be a high ankle sprain, which would put Garcia out 3 to 4 weeks. Nate Young replaced Garcia and ended an 0-for-15 slump by batting 3 for 7 with RBI singles in each game of the doubleheader and a triple in the opener.

As bad a day as it was for the Rainbows, it was completely opposite for UCI sophomore catcher Francis Larson. He batted 8 for 9 with four doubles, a home run and eight RBI in the doubleheader. Larson was 5 for 5 in the opener with three doubles and five RBIs; he was 3 for 4 in the second game with a two-run home run and double with three RBIs and four runs scored to help the Anteaters improve to 14-1.

In the opener, UH starter Matt Daly (3-2) went four-plus innings, allowing six runs (four earned), seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The three relievers who followed — Cameron Wheeler, Sam Spangler and Cory Kahn — allowed a combined eight runs in the remaining four innings.

Bryce Stowell (3-0) gave up four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six scoreless innings. Three relievers pitched an inning each, each allowing a run.

Jeff Van Doornum, who replaced Asato at DH, went 2 for 2 with a double.

The second game got off to an inauspicious start when UCI sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run first inning against UH starter Nick Rhodes (0-2). He lasted just one-plus inning, allowing six runs.

Harrison Kuroda gave up three runs in the next four innings and Jayson Kramer allowed four in the last three.

Christian Bergman (3-0) gave up a run, four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings for UCI.

The Rainbows had their only multiple-run inning of the series in the ninth of the nightcap. Kevin Fujii drew a walk, and Evan Zimny, Young and Jon Hee followed with singles, with Young and Hee driving in runs. Eric Pettis then struck out the last three batters to end it.

The series finale was originally scheduled for today, but the doubleheader was scheduled yesterday because rain was forecasted for the area on Friday, when the decision to play two was made.

After Tuesday's game with San Diego, the Rainbows open Western Athletic Conference play Thursday with a four-game series against two-time defending league champion Fresno State at Les Murakami Stadium.
