Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's basketball player Lucas Alves was named Pacific West Conference men's basketball Player of the Year today.

Alves, a sophomore center from Brazil, led the conference and is 16th nationally in scoring with 20.5 points per game. He also shot 57.5 percent from the field and averaged 8.5 rebounds, ranked second and third in the league.

Alves is a repeat selection to the PacWest first team and was named to the Daktronics All-West Region Division II men's basketball teams yesterday.

Chaminade coach Matt Mahar was named PacWest Coach of the Year after guiding the Silverswords to the league title and a 20-7 record. Five of Mahar's players earned all-league honors.

Chaminade's Hayden Heiber and Marko Kolaric earned first-team honors, along with BYUH's Paul Peterson. Earning second-team honors were Chaminade's Rodrick Johnson and Stewart Kussler, Hawai'i-Hilo's John Smith and Vince Alvarado and Hawai'i Pacific's Jason Curtis.

Kolaric also earned All-West Region honors.

Honorable mention honors went to BYUH's Corey Nielson, Chaminade's Mike Green, HPU's Rishi Kakad and Justonn Smith and Hilo's Sam Wilhoite.

Dixie State's Kasey Winters was named Newcomer of the Year and teammate Landon Clegg was named Freshman of the Year.

Both Chaminade and BYU-Hawai'i qualified for this week's NCAA West Region Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. The third-seeded Silverswords play Humboldt State (20-8) in tomorrow's first round while seventh-seeded BYUH (18-7) plays second-seeded Cal State San Bernardino (22-7).
