Lawmakers consider transfer of Aloha Stadium to UH

HONOLULU — State lawmakers are considering a proposal to transfer Aloha Stadium to the University of Hawaii and have it run by a public corporation that would raise money to rebuild it.
Supporters of the plan say it would create a new funding source for the stadium, which is in need of repairs. They say extra money from the stadium could go to the university's athletic department.
But opponents say the transfer is unnecessary.
State comptroller Russ Saito says the proposal disregards the fact that the stadium needs more money for ongoing maintenance.
House Finance Chairman Marcus Oshiro, who supports the idea, says he is concerned that the stadium will continue to sap state resources without a new funding source.
