KAUNAKAKAI
Recyling service opening at Moloka'i landfill July 3

Moloka'i residents will be able to recycle vehicles, appliances, scrap metal, tires, propane tanks and car batteries at the island's landfill beginning July 3.

The recycling service is for residents on an appointment-only basis, according to the county Department of Environmental Management. Commercial recycling will not be allowed.

A phone line — 336-0899 — is open now to schedule appointments Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m.

Prior to dropping off vehicles, residents will be required to complete a "Statement of Fact for Junking of a Non-Repairable Vehicle" form and a "Residential Vehicle Acceptance" form. Both forms are available at the Division of Motor Vehicles office on Moloka'i. The forms must be submitted prior to drop-off.

The county discontinued the metal recycling service several months ago in order to obtain state Department of Health permits.
