LANA'I CITY
Officials consider lifting ban on use of thrillcraft
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold an informal public meeting Wednesday to gauge support for thrillcraft use around the island.
The meeting will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hale Kupuna o Lana'i.
Commercial or recreational use of thrillcraft, such as Jet Skis, is prohibited around the islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i. The DLNR is reconsidering the ban after receiving a petition from Moloka'i residents in support of legalizing the riding of thrillcraft, also known as personal watercraft. The agency already held a public meeting on Moloka'i last month.
Thrillcraft operations are curtailed by DLNR policy in certain areas of the state to avoid possible adverse impacts on humpback whales or other protected marine life, to reduce conflicts between ocean users, and to promote public safety.
