LAS VEGAS — Wahiawa's Taylor Takata will fight for a berth on the U.S. Olympic Judo Team at tonight's finals of the 145.5-pound division of the Olympic Team Trials at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas
Takata, a 2000 'Iolani graduate, who trains and lives at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., pinned eighth-seeded Tanner Singh, of Dallas, in the quarterfinal round to win by ippon.
In the semifinal round, Takata held off No. 4 Justin Flores, to win by two yukos. Takata scored on a tomoe nage (circle throw) and inside foot sweep in the five-minute match.
Takata meets No. 2 seed Jeremy Liggett in tonight's final. However, if Liggett beats Takata, they will then fight in a best-of-three series to determine the Olympic berth, a luxury Takata receives as the tournament's top seed.
Also in today's competition, Kapolei's Clarissa Chun will wrestle long-time rival Patricia Miranda in the 105.5-pound final for a berth on the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team.
Chun won the Challenge Tournament, which Miranda sat out as the senior national champion, to set-up tonight's best-of-three final.
Chun, a 1999 Roosevelt graduate, beat Alyssa Lampe by technical fall in the quarterfinal round, then beat Sara Fulp-Allen, two rounds to one, in the semifinals. She then beat Mary Kelly in the Challenege Tournament final in two rounds.
