Wayside lookout to be closed for maintenance

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU – The Department of Land and Natural Resources will close the Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside lookout near Tantalus for two days for maintenance work on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21.

Boy Scout Troop 35 from Noelani Elementary School will perform a community service project at the park to paint the 'Ualaka'a lookout railings and pavilion sections and restripe the parking lot, according to a news release.

The preparation work and the project will require the closure of the lookout and its adjacent parking area starting Friday at noon, and all day Saturday. The lookout will reopen to the public on Sunday, June 22 at 7:00 a.m.

During this period, the park will remain open, but for the public's safety, the lookout section will remain closed.

Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside is a forested area on a cinder cone close to downtown Honolulu. The park lookout provides a sweeping view of southern O'ahu from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor, including Honolulu and Manoa Valley.

The park offers restrooms, picnic shelters, drinking water and the trailhead for the one-mile 'Ualaka'a Loop Trail. In summer the park is open from 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.4
