The wife of a man charged with the stabbing death of a teen who allegedly was trying to break up a domestic dispute between the couple said she and her husband weren't fighting with each other.
In an interview with The Advertiser yesterday, Kauilani Keohokapu said she wanted to share her story of the incident that led to her husband, Glenn J.K. Keohokapu Jr., 35, of Waimanalo, being charged with second-degree murder in the death of Steven Wilcox, 19, also of Waimanalo.
Police said Glenn Keohokapu stabbed Wilcox in the parking lot of Club Komomai in Kane'ohe early Sunday morning after Wilcox intervened while Keohokapu was fighting with a woman, identified by witnesses as his wife. At least one witness said Glenn Keohokapu was punching his wife.
"My husband did not touch me that night," said Kauilani Keohokapu, 30, who currently lives in Kahalu'u. "I was not punched. I was not even touched. I don't even have markings on my body."
Kauilani Keohokapu, who goes by "Kaui," said the problem started in the bar when a man was staring at her and her husband became upset.
Kaui Keohokapu said her husband left the bar and she walked after him to calm him down.
"Me being a wife, I followed my husband to actually calm him down because he was upset," said Kaui Keohokapu, a medical assistant. "And there was no punching, no hitting of me whatsoever."
Kaui Keohokapu would not comment further on the altercation that resulted in Wilcox's stabbing.
Glenn Keohokapu was arrested Monday night, the same day he had failed to appear in court for allegedly violating a restraining order issued to protect his wife.
Court records show that Keohokapu's wife filed for a restraining order against her husband in March, alleging she feared for her life because of his violent behavior while on drugs.
But Kaui Keohokapu said she had written a letter to officials requesting to drop the temporary restraining order because her "husband was getting the help that he needed" and the couple was working on reconciling their marriage differences through counseling.
But officials never responded to her letter, she said, and the order was issued. A three-month restraining order was granted and was due to expire Monday.
Kaui Keohokapu didn't deny the abuse described in court records.
"That is why we had counseling," she said.
Kaui Keohokapu said Glenn Keohokapu was her "first love," her high school sweetheart whom she has known since she was 14 years old.
They started dating in 1993 but she said she broke up with him two years after high school "because there were things that Glenn had to take care of in his life," she said.
"And then in 2006, because my husband showed a change in his life and that he wanted to change his life, that is when I gave my husband a second chance after being separated for 12 years."
The couple married in January of this year.
"I ended up giving my husband a second chance because he showed that he made that change, he wanted to do good in his life and he didn't want that lifestyle anymore," she said.
Kaui Keohokapu said her husband is not an evil person.
"For me to give my husband a second chance, that took a lot for me," she said. "He made unbelievable changes ... and if my husband didn't show that to me, I would ... still not be with him today."
While she did not want to talk about the stabbing, Kaui Keohokapu did want to express her condolences to the Wilcox family.
"My heart goes out to the family," she said. "I wish it never happened ... but I do want them to know that there's not a day that will go by that I will not forget that night."
