Glenn J.K. Keohokapu Jr. was indicted today on a charge of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 19-year-old Waimanalo man early Sunday morning.

Prosecutors said they may seek an extended sentence of life in prison without parole because Keohokapu, 35, is a "persistent" criminal offender.

Keohokapu allegedly fatally stabbed Steven Wilcox early Sunday in the parking lot of a Kaneohe bar.

Before the indictment was returned, Keohokapu appeared in court at a hearing, and District Judge Russel Nagata ordered him bound over for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge and set bail at $300,000.

Later in the day, the Oahu grand jury returned an indictment of Keohokapu on the second-degree murder charge.

The indictment said prosecutors may seek an extended term of imprisonment of Keohokapu. The second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, but an extended sentence would be life without parole.

Criminal statutes allows prosecutors to seek extended prison terms when "it is necessary for the protection of the public."

Keohokapu has been convicted of six felony offenses, most recently possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
