BARCELONA, Spain — Second-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia needed more than two hours to beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 today and advance to the quarterfinals of the Torneo Barcelona.
Kirilenko converted seven of 13 break-point opportunties against Suarez Navarro, who last week reached the French Open quarterfinals.
No. 4 Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic also had trouble advancing, holding on to beat Spanish wildcard Arantxa Parra 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Romania's Edina Gallovits eliminated seventh-seeded Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-0. Zakopalova earned only two break points in the match.
Zakopalova's ouster leaves Kirilenko, Safarova and No. 6 Sara Errani of Italy as the only seeded players to reach the quarterfinals.
Russia's Ekaterina Ivanova won today's other second-round match after rallying for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory against Maria Kondratieva, also of Russia.
