Summers wins Maui Open golf

Darren Summers shot a final-round 2-under 70 Sunday to capture the Kahili Maui Open at the Kahili Golf Course.

Summers shot a 2-under 142 total to win by one stroke and pocket the $3,000 first-place prize.

David Gerken (72), John Hearn (71) and Patrick Finigan (71) shared second place at 141. Each won $1,425.

Brian Sasada, who won the last Maui Open in 2002, finished ninth with 74—146.

Doug Williams shot 75—147 to win low-amateur honors.


VOLLEYBALL

REFT BOOSTS U.S.

Former University of Hawai'i libero Alfie Reft helped the U.S. men to a 25-22, 27-29, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Canada in the gold medal match at the Pan American Cup, Saturday in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The U.S. men won all four of their matches. The Dominican Republic defeated Mexico for the bronze medal.

Reft, from Oxnard, Calif., anchored the defense with 26 serve receptions — 88 percent "positive" and 62 percent "excellent."

The American women, who also sent a training squad to the Cup, finished fifth but still earned a berth into the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix.

LAM LOSES

Hyung-Kwon Kim defeated Honolulu's Chris Lam, 6-1, 7-5, in the final qualifying round of the $15,000 Recoating West Futures, in Loomis, Calif.

Lam was seeded fifth in qualifying and had won his first two matches in straight sets.

Lam and partner Dave Lingman are playing doubles in the USTA Pro Circuit event.
