HALLE, Germany — Roger Federer shook off his lopsided French Open final loss, extending his grasscourt streak to 55 matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win today over Michael Berrer at the Gerry Weber Open.

James Blake rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker, but defending champion Tomas Berdych went down 6-2, 7-5 to Robin Soderling.

The top-ranked Federer dropped just one point on serve in the first set against the 89th-ranked German player in his first match since his loss to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros.

Federer, a four-time winner at Halle, overwhelmed his opponent with precise shots and closed with an ace in a 61-minute Wimbledon warmup.

"My reaction was good, my movement was good, I'm very happy with my first-round performance," Federer said. "This wasn't necessarily expected, the preparation on grass was very short."

Federer won his 21st-straight match at Halle, a streak that began in 2003. His first four Wimbledon titles came after he won the event.

Federer spent just 1› hours warming up on grass, coming three days after winning only four games in the French Open final. He said there were two ways to deal with the defeat: either disappear until Wimbledon starts on June 23 or get back on the court.

"You can come here, field the questions for a day, then play your first match on grass," Federer said. "This way I can build my confidence for Wimbledon."

Federer was given a standing ovation from the 8,000 spectators after the match.

"I was really touched," he said. "And at the way a roar went through the crowd at a good shot."

Berrer's serve kept him in the match in the first set until 4-4, when Federer finally gained a break.

Federer broke Berrer's serve to go up 2-0 in the second set, hitting a backhand so hard the German couldn't get his racket near it at the net.

"Sometimes it can be frustrating on grass, because you don't have a chance when someone is serving good," Federer said. "But I like that, waiting for my chance — maybe that's why I'm so successful on grass."

In other matches, defending champion Tomas Berdych lost to Robin Soderling 6-2, 7-5, Philipp Kohlschreiber edged Tommy Haas 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (5) and Andreas Beck defeated Mischa Zverev, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-1.
