The driver of a sport utility vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a pedestrian critically injured near Aloha Tower Marketplace surrendered to police Saturday night.

The 25-year-old man, of the Mo'ili'ili area, was accompanied by his attorney, police said. He was arrested for felony failure to render aid by vehicular homicide investigators and later released pending further investigation. Additional charges are pending the condition of the 39-year-old injured man, who was hospitalized last night at The Queen's Medical Center.

The suspect vehicle is a black Chevy sport utility vehicle, not a Cadillac Escalade as previously reported, investigators said.

Vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. John Agno said the pedestrian was on the sidewalk on South Nimitz Highway, 109 feet south of Fort Street, at 2:07 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by the south-bound SUV, which moved into the right lane and jumped the curb. Witnesses told police the driver stopped briefly before driving off toward Waikiki.

Police, meanwhile, are still looking for the driver of a light-colored SUV that fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run Wednesday on Dillingham Boulevard that killed a 79-year-old pedestrian. The SUV had paper license plates, indicating it is a new vehicle.
