Kalaupapa kupuna to share story at Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani

Advertiser staff

Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani g.m. Fred Orr and longtime Moloka'i resident Henry Nalaielua plan a talk-story reunion and presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 12 in the Pikake Terrace of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hotel to share memories of their long friendship, and Nalaielua's life as chronicled in the Kalaupapa resident's best-selling memoir "No Footprints in the Sand: A Memoir of Kalaupapa."

As former general manager of the Sheraton Moloka'i Hotel, Orr would hike down to Kalaupapa to visit and fish with his friend.

"No Footprints" is Nalaielua's life story, chronicling his experiences from his childhood when he was diagnosed in 1936 at age 10 with Hansen's disease (then called leprosy) to his present-day life, which he continues to spend at Kalaupapa on Moloka'i.

The approximately two-hour program, presented by the Princess Kaiulani Hotel, will give visitors and local residents an opportunity to hear Nalaielua speak about his life as a Hansen's disease patient and Kalaupapa resident.

"No Footprints in the Sand" is one of only a few memoirs ever shared with the public by a Kalaupapa patient. In the words of PulitzerPrize-winning poet W.S. Merwin, it is "a rare and precious human document."

Nalaielua and "No Footprints" co-author Sally-Jo Bowman will sign copies of the book after the presentation. For more information, call the hotel at (808) 922-5811 or visit www.princess-kaiulani.com.

"No Footprints in the Sand" was released in 2006 by Watermark Publishing of Honolulu. Copies of "No Footprints," as well as Bowman's new book, "The Heart of Being Hawaiian" (Watermark Publishing) will be available for purchase at the event.
