Seattle-based HomeStreet Bank recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Hale Mahaolu Akahi Inc. in recognition of its program to provide affordable housing for Maui's elderly.

Officials said the HomeStreet Community Housing Award will be used by the low-income housing agency for the ongoing renovation of its 110-unit Akahi campus in Kahului.

Hale Mahaolu has already renovated 85 of the Akahi apartments, and the remaining 25 are expected to be completed in the next three to five years, said executive director Roy Katsuda. The improvements include installation of safety equipment in bathrooms, removal of potentially hazardous materials, and replacement of appliances, flooring and kitchen cabinets.

The HomeStreet Community Housing Awards program supports nonprofit organizations that work to meet housing-related needs in Washington, Oregon and Hawai'i. This includes organizations that provide transitional housing or affordable rental housing, or help people move along the path toward home ownership.
