A man was critically injured last night in a pedestrian accident in Iwilei.
The pedestrian was hit by a vehicle shortly before 9 p.m. on Dillingham Boulevard near Ka'aahi Street, city emergency services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said. The pedestrian was dragged about 20 feet and pinned under the vehicle, he said.
The man was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center.
Police closed several lanes of Dillingham Boulevard during their investigation.
MOLOKA'I APPEAL MADE TO LINGLE
Gov. Linda Lingle has been asked to stop Molokai Ranch from discontinuing its water and sewer service on the Friendly Island.
The request came from a number of elected officials, including Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares, state Sen. Kalani English, state Rep. Mele Carroll and Maui County vice chairman Danny A. Mateo.
"The governor feels that these are services that are generally performed and provided by the counties and certainly we would therefore be willing to work with them to assist them in that effort," Barry Fukunaga, Lingle's chief of staff, said yesterday.
The company serves about 1,200 customers on the island, which had 2,305 households as of the 2000 Census.
Molokai Ranch, which owns a third of the island, announced in March that it was shutting down most of its operations, meaning the layoff of more than 120 employees.
CONSTRUCTION FATALITY NAMED
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has identified the construction worker killed Monday at a Kapi'olani Boulevard job site as Gregory K. Wong, 50, of Wai'anae.
Wong was struck in the head by the boom of a concrete pumping machine, which had been lifted off the ground after becoming entangled in ropes from a crane.
