State Web site features vog information page

Associated Press

Gov. Linda Lingle's office is trying to spread awareness about volcanic smog with a new Web page addressing how the so-called "vog" affects health and crops.

The page, which went up last week, answers questions like "What is sulfur dioxide?" and "What can I do to protect myself or prepare for possible health effects of vog?"

It also features a video of state adjutant general Maj. Gen. Robert Lee explaining what government agencies are doing to monitor Kilauea's harmful emissions.

The site says the long-term health effects of vog are unknown.

In the short-term, it says people with pre-existing respiratory conditions are more prone to headaches, breathing difficulties, and sore throats due to vog.
