Wai'anae senior Ben McQuown has been the Seariders' go-to guy the past two years, and this season he rose to the top of the O'ahu Interscholasti Association's Red Conference Western Division.

McQuown, a 5-foot-10 pitcher/outfielder, was named West Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.

McQuown batted .500 (18 for 36), with five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBIs, 11 runs scored and six stolen bases. As a pitcher, he went 3-1 with a 2.42 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 26 innings.

In one big week midway through the season, McQuown went 5 for 8 with two home runs and seven RBIs in victories over 'Aiea and Kapolei. The wins helped the Seariders recover from a 1-3 start to qualify for the league playoffs.

Wai'anae coach Kekoa Kaluhiokalani said McQuown ranks among the best hitters to come through the Seariders' program. McQuown is still considering his options and is most likely headed to a Mainland junior college.

"He would be a steal for whoever gets him," said Kaluhiokalani, who has been coaching in Wai'anae's program since 1995. "He'll shock a lot of people."

West champion Pearl City dominated the all-star selections with five players: third baseman Bryson Namba, outfielder Duane Kiyota, catcher Carlton Tanabe, and pitchers Bryson Nakamura and Corey Yuh.

Kapolei placed second baseman Kalani Breckenridge and outfielder Curtis Donald.

Campbell first baseman Sebastian Locquiao, 'Aiea second baseman Brennan Alejo, Mililani designated hitter Travis Jones and Leilehua utility player Desmond Ontai round out the first team.

McQuown, Brackenridge, Jones and Ontai are repeat first-team selections.

Pearl City's Gary Nakamoto, in his first year at the Chargers' helm after taking over for longtime skipper Mel Seki, was named Coach of the Year.
