KIHEI, MAUI— The County of Maui yesterday took possession of new rest-room facilities at Kamaole Beach Park III.

The keys to the new, 640-square-foot, $550, facility were officially turned over to Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares by Bob Armstrong, managing member of developer Kai Malu Wailea LLC. The design and construction of the rest-room facility was paid for by the developer as part of a conditional special management area permit for the 150-unit Kai Malu at Wailea resort condominium project.

The new facility contains one ADA-compliant toilet stall, three additional toilets and one sink in the women's rest-room, one ADA-compliant toilet stall, an additional toilet, two urinals and one sink on the men's side, a storage room and a janitor's closet with sink. The facility was constructed by contractor Maui Master Builders.

"Kamaole III is one of our island's most popular parks for both residents and visitors alike, and this new rest-room will be greatly appreciated by beachgoers," Tavares said in a news release. "Our Parks development staff has worked closely with the developer and contractors to facilitate this significant project."

The Kai Malu at Wailea project received conditional SMA approval on Nov. 18, 2004. In addition to standard fees and contributions paid by the developer, the SMA provisions included the Kamaole III Comfort Station, as well as a $98,000 donation to the West Maui Resource Center for solar water heating, air conditioning for its child care center and computers for its work training center, and a $100,000 donation toward matching funds for the painting of Kihei Elementary School.
