Peace bell ringing Aug. 6 to mark Hiroshima bombing
Advertiser Staff
An 11 a.m. bell-ringing ceremony is planned Aug. 6 at Izumo Taishakyo Mission to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
The mission is located at 215 North Kukui St.
Edward Joseph, founder of the Origami for Peace Coalition, will be among the speakers at Hiroshima Commemoration and Peace Committee-hosted event. The inspiration for the coalition is Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who lost her life due to the effects of radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima. While seriously ill, Sasaki started to fold 1,001 cranes. There's a statue in her memory at the Peace Park in Hiroshima.
Dr. George Suzuki will be recognized for his dedicated efforts to study and treat victims of the Hiroshima bombing for more than 50 years.
Rev. Irene Matsumoto of the Palolo Kwannon Temple of Hawaii will ring the bell.
