Plans have been revealed for Las Vegas' next new resort. Locals-casino giant Station Casinos will break ground on Durango Station on the far southwest side of town in 2009. The resort's first phase will consist of a 201-room tower, along with a casino, convention space, restaurants and multiplex theater. The hook of the project, though, will be a 190,000-square-foot outdoor retail complex. Completion is scheduled for 2011, and a planned second phase will add 525 rooms.
MORE ROOMS: A new $100 million hotel tower opened last week at South Point. The additional 830 rooms give the resort a total of 2,163, the most of any "locals casino" in Las Vegas.
POKER ON TV: Television coverage of this year's World Series of Poker has begun on ESPN. Two-hour shows will air on Tuesdays all the way up to the coverage of the final table of the main event in November. Meanwhile, Fox Sports Net has been announced as the new home of the World Poker Tour next year. The network will air 26 one-hour episodes on Sunday nights.
TOMMY'S IN VEGAS: Original Tommy's, a mainstay of the California burger-joint crowd, has opened its first Las Vegas location at 3009 St. Rose Parkway, in Henderson. A single burger with Tommy's famous chili is $2.
Q. Which casino opened a strip club by its pool?
A. It's not quite as you describe, but the Rio hosts the Sapphire Brazilian Pool in conjunction with the Sapphire gentlemen's club — the first such arrangement between a Las Vegas topless club and a casino. The Sapphire girls populate the pool area daily, but they don't perform. It's a sexy scene, but tariffs are steep: Cover charges are $30 weekdays and $50 weekends for men and $10 at all times for women.
