Ryan fastest Volcano runner
Advertiser Staff
Alan Ryan of Laupahoehoe won the marathon at yesterday's 26th annual Kilauea Volcano Runs on the Big Island, completing a new course that was made necessary because of ongoing volcanic activity in 3 hours, 20 minutes, 55 seconds.
Ryan edged last year's runner-up Paul Hopwood of Wailuku, who finished in 3:21:10.
Amy Ray-McWhinney of Kea'au won the female division, finishing 17th overall in 4:09:29. Honoka'a's Karen Brisson was second in 4:09:49.
Despite a route that traveled more on roads and wooded trails and less on the rough and uneven terrain of lava trails, the marathon times were slower than the top 10 best times recorded on the old course.
"The marathoners said it was tough," race director Wayne Joseph said. "They had a hard time on the rolling hills. It was a lot of up and down."
The event also consisted of a 10-mile run, a 5-mile run and a non-competitive 5-mile walk. It started and finished at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, where the elevation is 4,000 feet. There were 736 finishers out of 858 who registered.
Luis De La Torre of Kailua, Kona won the 10-mile Rim Run in 1:03:08, setting a record on a new course. Honolulu's Ryan Gillia was second in 1:03:57. Kealakekua's Rani Tanimoto was the first female finisher in 1:10:13, placing fourth overall. Merle Nilk of Washington D.C. was second in 1:16:22.
Germain Ortiz won the 5-mile Caldera Run in 33:04, followed by Penn Henderson of Kailua, Kona in 34:45. Eri Macdonald of Kailua won the women's race in 36:38, placing sixth overall, followed by Heather Harland of Honanau in 39:49.
