Court building screeners stop another handgun
For the second time this year Big Island police have arrested someone allegedly trying to enter the State Building in Hilo with a loaded handgun.
Detectives charged 60-year-old John G.S.H. Kanekoa of Kea'au with a felony weapons offense after security screeners at the state building saw what appeared to be the outline of a handgun while checking Kanekoa's bag Tuesday. The screener alerted a deputy sheriff, who detained the man.
Police who were called to the scene at about 10 a.m. said they seized a loaded Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver and 84 loose bullets from the bag. Kanekoa was released on $2,000 bail Tuesday night.
In March, security screeners at the same entrance to the same building stopped another man who allegedly walked in carrying a loaded .38-caliber pistol in a pink diaper bag.
Johan Iseger, 58, of Nanawale Estates, was arrested and charged in that case.
The State Building houses the Hilo Circuit and District courtrooms.
