The Kane'ohe Canoe Club can now celebrate with a six-pack.

Kane'ohe won its sixth consecutive Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a championship yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Seventeen clubs from around O'ahu participated in the day-long regatta.

"This is number six, but every year is not an easy year," Kane'ohe assistant coach Ace Esau said. "It's hard to be at the top every year — all the other clubs are getting better and better and made it tough for us this year."

Kane'ohe saved its best for last, scoring a season-high 81 points in the 39-race regatta.

Manu O Ke Kai placed second with 57 points.

Waikiki Beach Boys — the only club to beat Kane'ohe in a regatta this season — scored 56 points to win the AA division for medium-sized clubs.

The six-year reign for Kane'ohe is the second-longest in the 36-year history of the Hui Wa'a organization. Lokahi won 12 consecutive titles from 1987-98.

The key during Kane'ohe's run has been its youth paddlers, and yesterday was no exception.

Kane'ohe won eight of the 13 youth races, and the youth paddlers accounted for 48 of the team's points.

"This club has always focused on the kids," Esau said. "We trained them hard all week, getting them ready for this and for the (state championship regatta on Aug. 2)."

Two Kane'ohe crews — the boys 14s and boys 18s — capped undefeated seasons with victories yesterday.

"There was some pressure because we wanted to help the club and we wanted to keep our winning streak," said Kepa Souza, who steered the boys 14 crew.

Kane'ohe won one adult race — the mixed open-6.

"We feel like we have to do our part," said Keiki Kipapa-Hussey, who steered the crew. "Of course, the kids are great. But we feel like we have to place in our race, too, to make it happen for the club."

Even with its sixth consecutive Hui Wa'a title, Kane'ohe is not expected to challenge the state's other big clubs for the overall state championship on Aug. 2. Esau said the club may even drop to a lower division because it does not have as many paddlers as the big clubs from other organizations.

"We're going to take all our kids, but we're still deciding which adults we want to use," Esau said.

Manu O Ke Kai won seven races yesterday, including the prestigious men's senior race. The crew of Jason Bellefeuille, Greg Pavao, Bonga Perkins, Tomas Schlotman, Glenn Williams and Moku Sanborn completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 11 minutes, 0.98 seconds to edge Waikiki Beach Boys by 10 seconds.

"We've been going back-and-forth with them all year," Sanborn said. "This was the tie-breaker right here."

Waikiki Beach Boys won six races, including the prestigious women's senior race. The crew of Dana Gorecki, Kelsa Teeters, Jennifer Polcer, Frances Lichowski, Andrea Messer and Kaui Pelekane finished the 1 1/2-mile course in 12:23.29. The second-place crew from Lokahi came in almost two minutes later.

"We've been racing the clock every week," Gorecki said. "And today was the first time we had all our girls available, so we wanted to see how fast we could go."

Waikiki Beach Boys has been undefeated against Hui Wa'a competition in the women's senior race since 2004. They are also the two-time defending state champion in that race.

Ka Mamalahoe won the A division for small clubs with 19 points.

Yesterday was the last chance for Hui Wa'a clubs to qualify for the Aug. 2 state championship regatta. The top three Hui Wa'a crews in each division advanced to the state regatta.

The O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association will hold its championship regatta today at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
