ATLANTA — Washington first baseman Dmitri Young was placed on the 15-day disabled list after missing his second straight start today, complaining of having high blood sugar and feeling lightheaded.

Young, a diabetic, was pulled out of Friday night's lineup when he said he felt dizzy and had difficulty focusing. The problem with his vision continued on Saturday.

"It's a monster," Young said of his battle to control his blood sugar.

The Nationals will recall third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who has been out since May 26 with a left shoulder injury, from a minor league rehab assignment. Zimmerman will join the team in San Francisco on Tuesday.

"It will be nice to have Zimmerman back," said manager Manny Acta. "It will give us a little more depth in our lineup. We will have another threat in the lineup."

Young also has been slowed by tightness in his back, but the symptoms of diabetes were of greater concern on Saturday.

"He's pretty much the same," Acta said before the game. "He's still not well enough to play."

Young was examined by Dr. Brooks Lide on Friday night. Lide, a Braves physician, said Young's symptoms should improve if he kept his blood sugar in check, according to the Nationals.

Paul Lo Duca started at first base the first two games of the series against the Braves.

Young is hitting .280 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 50 games.
