NAGOYA, Japan — Grand champion Hakuho defeated Futeno on Friday to move into sole possession of the lead at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

In the day's final bout at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, Mongolian Hakuho swatted down winless No. 3 maegashira Futeno to improve to a perfect 6-0 in the 15-day tournament.

Hakuho moved one win ahead of compatriot Ama, who was handed his first loss of the tournament, droppingd to 5-1 when he was forced out by fellow sekiwake Kotoshogiku, who improved to 3-3.

Ozeki Kotomitsuki is also one win off the pace at 5-1 after dispatching komusubi Toyonoshima, who fell to a 3-3 record.

Earlier Friday, grand champion Asashoryu withdrew because of a right ankle injury and soreness in his elbow.

Asashoryu was bidding for his 23rd Emperor's Cup at the Nagoya meet but leaves the tournament with an unimpressive 3-3 record.

He forfeited Friday's bout against fourth-ranked maegashira Wakanosato, who improved to 4-2.

Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu improved to 4-2 by overpowering komusubi Kisenosato, who fell to 2-4.

Ozeki wrestlers Kaio and Chiyotaikai both posted wins on Day 6 to improve to 4-2.
