The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has restored signs at the Ka Iwi shoreline park that will allow public users to once again take their pets on the Makapu'u Lighthouse trail.

Residents objected when the state banned pets from the hike in May, following complaints about dog feces.

Last month, state Parks Administrator Dan Quinn assured about 60 residents gathered at a Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board meeting that pets would be allowed to return to the trail and emphasized that dogs must be kept on leash according to law.

Four signs measuring 18 by 24 inches were placed last week near the Alan Davis seawall area and one measuring 24 by 36 inches was posted near the start of the trail. All prohibit animals, except when on leash.

The state will work with the Hawaiian Humane Society on a sign to advise pet owners of proper etiquette at public parks, Quinn said in an e-mail on Wednesday.

"DLNR recognizes that the Ka Iwi area is popular with many people who enjoy the scenery and being outdoors in this wildland area," he said. "Our objective is to preserve a natural environment and ensure safe and healthy conditions for recreational users."
