Removal of Kahuku whale carcass slated tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

A sperm whale carcass, rotting on rocky ledge in Kahuku for nearly two weeks, will be removed tomorrow and buried at a site donated by a private landowner mauka of Kamehameha Highway.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Service, state Department of Land & Natural Resources and Hawai'i Pacific University officials will oversee the removal and burial operation. A backhoe and front-end loader will be used to remove the carcass from the ledge and it will be cut into smaller pieces. Some bones will be harvested for research and educational purposes.
