Mavs still courting 'Iolani alum Low

Honolulu's Derrick Low had two rebounds in a reserve role yesterday in the Dallas Mavericks' 88-74 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in an NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas.

Low, a 2004 'Iolani School alum, took two shots, including one from 3-point range, and missed both. He committed one foul in 5 minutes, 14 seconds of play as a rookie point guard.

The Mavericks' win ruined the NBA debut of UCLA alum Kevin Love, who led the Timberwolves (0-1) with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mavericks closed out the first quarter on a 19-6 run earning a seven-point lead heading into the second quarter where they padded the lead to as many as 24.

JaJuan Smith led all scorers with 19 points for the Mavericks (1-2).


GOLF

KIM TIED FOR 43RD

Most of the five Hawai'i golfers are in the back of the pack after the first day of the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Aurora, Colo.

Former Kaimuki High golfer and 2006 state high school champion Chan Kim, who resides in Chandler, Ariz., shot 2-over 73 and is tied for 43rd place.

Mililani's Jared Sawada shot a 4-over 75 (tied for 82nd), Sean Maekawa of the Big Island shot a 5-over-76 (t103), and Wailuku's Taeksoo Kim and Kapa'a's Kellen Watabu both shot 11-over 82 (t150).

The leader is Aaron Goldberg of Carlsbad, Calif., who shot 6-under 65. Zachary Zaremba of Pueblo West, Colo., and Travis Reid of Clovis, N.M., each shot 5-under 66s.

The event is being held at the Murphy Creek Golf Course, which plays 7,551 yards, the longest course in the event's history, with a par of 36-35—71.

Stroke play will continue through today with the field then being reduced to the lowest 64 players, who advance to match play.

First-round of match play is tomorrow, followed by the second and third rounds Thursday, the quarterfinals and semifinals Friday and a 36-hole final on Saturday.

Hawai'i golfers have experienced success in this event with Casey Watabu winning in 2006, Guy Yamamoto in 1994, Charles Barenaba in 1974 and Randy Barenaba in 1975.


SOCCER

HOLOMUA'S RUN ENDS

Holomua, an over-50 women's soccer team, lost in the semifinals of the Veterans Cup, the U.S. Adult Soccer Association championships in Bellingham, Wash., from July 9 to 13.

The loss ended a streak of three straight national titles by Holomua.

Holomua lost to Seattle's Best, 3-2, despite goals from Maris van der Lee and Sandy Kalama in the semifinals.

In pool play, Holomua beat the Seattle Longshots, 4-0, with two goals from Kathy Farley and one each by Maris van der Lee and Kiki Lau. It beat the Fired Up Fifties of Texas, 3-0, with goals by Debbie Aiu and Stella Allen, and an own goal, and downed the San Diego Celtics, 2-1, with goals from Maris van der Lee and Casey Adams.
