Even with a different group of players, it was the same result for an under-16 girls team from Key Largo, Fla.
The Hurricanes defeated 'Aiea, 2-1, yesterday to repeat as champions of the American Youth Soccer Organization's National Games at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.
The Hurricanes also won the under-14 championship in 2006, but only seven players remain from that team. Other players on this Hurricanes team were in the under-12 championship game but lost to a team from La'ie in 2006.
"It felt good because we won and people thought we couldn't win and lots of people left because they thought we couldn't do it," said Heather Williams, who scored both goals for Hurricanes.
The National Games wrapped up yesterday with eight champions from four divisions, boys and girls under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 19. The winners are not called national champions because they were selected to play in the tournament by lottery instead of qualifying.
The next tournament will be in 2010 in Florida.
Williams scored her first goal in the fifth minute when she used her superior speed to create room in the 'Aiea defense before blasting it past the goalkeeper.
"The defenders were coming on one side and I cut it where they weren't," said Williams, who said the Hurricanes played without any substitutes.
'Aiea forward Tiana Fujimoto tied the score in the 25th minute on an assist from Amber Bonifacio, who dribbled up the middle of the field near the top of the 18-yard box and passed a through ball to the left for Fujimoto. She finished the play on a shot to the right corner of the goal.
Fujimoto was also dangerous on free kicks, with two shots bouncing off the crossbar in the 28th and 51st minutes.
"It was fun," said Fujimoto, 14, who was playing in an older division. "It was the first time I played with (her 'Aiea teammates) so it was a good experience."
Williams put the Hurricanes ahead for good with about six minutes to play off a free kick by Kelley Struyf that popped in the air as 'Aiea tried to clear it. Williams broke free outside of the 6-yard box and scored on a shot to the left corner.
"I felt really good because I scored when the team needed to get ahead," said Williams, who was moved to defender after the goal to help preserve the win.
"This was a different group of girls, and I think it was a struggle to get here, so it's much more gratifying," Hurricanes coach Arthur Paterson said.
It was the eighth game in four days for both teams.
"It felt good; we worked hard to get there," Fujimoto said. "We're all bust up, bruises everywhere. It was good playing against Mainland teams and competition."
