Maui panel rejects bid for Maalaea vacation rentals

WAILUKU, Hawaii — The Maui Planning Commission has recommended rejecting Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson's request to operate a vacation rental on apartment-zoned land in the oceanside community of Ma'alaea.
The Maui County Council will make the final decision. The council will also vote on the Nelson Trust's request to operate a wedding business on an adjacent parcel.
Nelson began operating the Ma'alaea rental in 2002 and started the wedding business a short time later, the Maui Planning Department said. Neighbors have complained about the noise from Nelson's property.
The Nelson Trust also owns vacation rentals in Pa'ia and Kihei.
