Watch out: Pterygium, a noncancerous growth over the white part of the eye, has been diagnosed more frequently in people who spend a lot of time in the sun and wind, e.g., surfers. No treatment is required, unless it blocks your vision. Then, it can be removed surgically. Keep wearing your sunglasses, even on a cloudy day. Clouds do not wipe out UV rays. And don't be fooled into thinking that pricey sunglasses provide the best protection. The label is more important than the price tag. Make sure it says 99 percent to 100 percent UV protection, and make sure the label on your children's sunglasses says the same.

WORKPLACE ETIQUETTE

VACATION MEANS YOU NEED TO EMPTY FRIDGE

Heading out for a summer vacation? Do something with that food you've got stored in the company fridge, whether it's taking it home or giving it away, suggests Lizzie Post, Emily Post's great-great granddaughter and author of "How Do You Work This Life Thing?" And be courteous, in the first place: Don't fill the fridge, freezer and pantry with so much food that no one else has space.

FINAL WORD

"Right now, everything is kind of merged together because pop is such a nebulous format. ... You'll hear a hip-hop record next to sort of a rock-sounding pop beat, or a country song."
